How to reset an overwhelming to-do list

Triage an ignored backlog into now, later, reference, and let-go—without rebuilding the whole system.

Do not read an old list as a contract. It is a pile of messages from a past version of you, many of which are no longer addressed to today.

Four passes, not a full rewrite

  1. Now: Keep only items with a current consequence or a clear next action.
  2. Later: Move real ideas and future commitments out of your daily field of view.
  3. Reference: Save information that is useful but not actionable.
  4. Let go: Delete stale obligations, duplicate reminders, and tasks you no longer intend to do.

Give each item a fast answer. If it needs research to decide, move it to later with a date to reconsider. Do not turn cleanup into a new research project. A backlog is not a museum; it is allowed to lose things.

Finish by choosing one task from Now. A reset works only when it returns you to action.
